Topic Areas

Dormont Pool

Parks & Open Space

Dormont's public spaces are integral to the borough's quality of life. These spaces represent more than just recreation areas; they are an essential community service, where residents gather to make connections, to share ideas, and to build meaningful relationships with their neighbors. There is limited public open space in the borough (less than 7% of land area) almost all of which is concentrated in 24-acre Dormont Park and the 5.5-acre Beggs Snyder Park.

Stevenson Station

Transportation

Access to the T is a major asset to Dormont, allowing its residents to reach downtown Pittsburgh in roughly 20 minutes. As such, public transportation use is a popular mode of commuting to work for Dormont residents, as is walking. While work is underway to upgrade Dormont Junction station, there has been a significant drop in rail ridership since 2012. This is likely due to spillover effects from the pandemic, which has increase work-from-home situations.

Historic home

Housing

Dormont is a residential community consisting mostly ofsingle-family detached homes. There is a relative diversity of housing options, including a significant proportion of apartment buildings. Roughly half of all housing is owner-occupied. With 96% of houses built before 1980, many homes have a historic character. This contributes to the borough's aesthetic appeal but also affects energy use and the overall costs of homeownership.

Business Districts

Dormont's 2021-2026 Strategic Plan called for enhancing the vibrancy, aesthetic appeal, and safe walkability of the entire Dormont Business District for residents, visitors, and business owners. This could involve a community branding initiative as well as improving the pedestrian experience of West Liberty Avenue, Dormont's primary commercial corridor. Other business areas, such as Broadway Avenue, could also use improvements.

Pedestrian Refuge Island

Accessibility

To ensure that all residents, regardless of age or ability, can safely take advantage of all the borough has to offer, Dormont has completed a Pedestrian Mobility Audit of the borough. Based on the findings of the Pedestrian Mobility Audit, the borough will create a Pedestrian Mobility Plan to establish a schedule of changes and adaptations that should be made to make the borough safe and accessible to all pedestrians. Next steps could also include a Language Access Plan.

Sustainability & Resiliency

In 2013, the most prominent environmental concern was flooding; this is likely to be a concern today. Older infrastructure, combined with steep slopes and heavier rain events, is forcing many cities to reconsider how they manage stormwater. Dormont must also think about sustainability more holistically: in the lens of economic stability, housing choice, and quality of life for current and future residents.
